Search for Locked Antlers for Special Display at Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular

Would you like to see a special display of locked whitetail deer antlers at the Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular? Of course. So would the producers of the Spectacular, and they are searching to find sets of locked antlers for such a display.

"Antlers must be big before they can lock during a fight. This type of display occupies quite a bit of square footage, so we’ll be limited to the first 18 sets. We’ll take them on a first-come, first-served basis; that’s the only fair way," said Glenn Helgeland of Target Communications, producer of the Spectacular. Locked antlers aren’t a statistical rarity, but every time they are found they are newsworthy.

The 22nd Annual Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular will be February 8-10 at the Lansing Center in Lansing.

Helgeland is asking anyone who knows of or has locked antlers to call him (1-800-324-3337) during the day (central daylight time) or send him an e-mail (glenn@deerinfo.com).

"Locked antlers are tragic reminders of the harshness of Mother Nature and her operating rules, because they almost always result in the deaths of two magnificent animals," Helgeland adds. "That almost always takes some of the biggest and the best from the breeding population."

Special transportation, display and security arrangements will be made for each set of locked antlers, Helgeland said. Arrangements must be made in advance of the Deer & Turkey Spectacular. It is preferred that the locked sets be brought in by noon Friday, February 8, so they can be set up and on display when the event opens at 2 p.m. that day. They must remain on display until the close of the show at 4 p.m., Sunday, February 10.

Highlights of 2008 Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular

A new trail camera photo contest, special display of locked whitetail deer antlers, the world's almost-largest treestand and continued in-depth food plot and deer habitat seminars highlight the 2008 Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular, February 8-9-10 at the Lansing Center in Lansing.

The food plot and deer habitat presentations are by Gordon Whittington, North American Whitetail Television executive producer, and Tony LaPratt, Coldwater, MI, outlining the necessary principles of habitat improvement and maintenance to attract and hold deer on your property on a year-round basis AND develop the habitat so you can hunt bucks more successfully.

The food plot demonstration area will have nursery flats of various grain crops, grasses and other deer feed sources, plus a special display on soil testing procedures. "Soil testing is a hugely important first step that a lot of people overlook," notes Glenn Helgeland, producer of the Deer & Turkey Spectacular. "Without soil testing to get you started right, you're flying blind. ou can't just toss seeds on the ground and get a lush jungle of nutritious deer foods, although that's often what is expected."

" Food plots and habitat improvement do more than benefit deer and turkeys," Helgeland added. "This is natural resource stewardship for the benefit of water, soil, vegetation, game species and non-game species," he added.

The locked antler display, last done in 2001, is a collection of locked antlers owned by various Michigan (and neighboring state) hunters. Fifteen to 20 sets are expected to be displayed. If you have or know of locked antlers, contact the Spectacular's producers at 1-800-324-3337 or send an e-mail to Helgeland (glenn@deerinfo.com).
The trail camera photo contest will have half a dozen divisions. Go to the Spectacular's web-site (www.deerinfo.com) for contest details.

The world's almost-largest treestand, positioned near the center aisle of the exhibit, makes an excellent viewing and photography platform. Treestand safety materials will be placed at the base of the stand. "We all can use a reminder about the proper use of treestands," Helgeland notes, because they're dangerous but too often we get blase` about that danger when we use them."

Returning activities include:
  • More than 250 exhibit booths, highlighting hunting products and accessories (black powder, centerfire firearms, archery), guides and outfitters from throughout North America, wild game cooking items, book/magazine/video producers, and more. These are the places to see new products and to get your questions answered by product specialists. Many exhibitors will have products for sale.
  • New products special display area, where you can examine new products without a sales person at your shoulder, then go to the various exhibiting manufacturers' booths for product details.
  • 2-1/2 days of new seminar topics on deer hunting and turkey hunting.
  • The trophy whitetail deer/bear/elk/turkey contest features new entries every year, keeping the displays eye-popping, fresh and interesting. More than 225 entries are expected. Scoring is done by members of the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan.
  • Byron Ferguson, an internationally known trick archery shot and accomplished bowhunter, will perform Saturday and Sunday.
  • Optics Hands-On Tryout Area, featuring rifle scopes and binoculars.
  • Venison butchering and processing demonstrations, plus wild foods cooking demonstrations.
  • A wide range of hands-on shooting opportunities (airgun, laser firearms, laser archery, bow tryout area, and the National Archery in Schools Program free instructional range).
  • The Spectacular also has a live wild animal display, including live wild turkeys; outdoor photo contest; a mountain man camp display; flint knapping demonstrations and other special displays and activities the entire family will enjoy.
Show hours are 2 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8; 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. Trophy Deer - Elk - Bear - Turkey Contest at Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular

You’re invited to enter your Michigan whitetail buck, black bear, bull elk or turkey in the trophy contest at the upcoming Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular, Feb. 8-9-10, at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing. There also is an out-of-state category for whitetail buck entries. Basic entry fee is $15; in return you get a three-day pass ($27 value), so entering the contest is the most economical way to see the show.

There is no advance entry; just bring your trophy to the show. Award presentation begins at 4 p.m. Sunday, and entries must be present to win. No trophies will be released between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday. More than 225 Michigan big game trophies are expected. All measuring and scoring is done by members of the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan (CBM).

Contest rules:
  • Entries begin at noon Friday and close at 10 a.m. Sunday.
  • Entry fee is $15 for the first trophy you enter. For additional entries, it’s $7.50 if the trophy already has been officially measured, $15 if the trophy has not been officially measured. If the trophy already has been officially measured, it will not be measured again, so bring paperwork proof with you if it has already been officially scored. Antlers do NOT need to be mounted.
  • Michigan deer -- typical antler and non-typical antler classes in firearms, archery and black powder
divisions; historical (2006 season and earlier) and current-year (2007 season) categories in firearms and archery divisions only. Black powder entries are much fewer, so they are grouped together in one category regardless of year taken. Eight-, nine-, 10-, 11-, 12- and 13+-point categories in typical-antler categories.
  • Out-of-State antler entries can be from any state (except Michigan) or Canadian province or Mexico.
  • Black bear -- firearms and archery classes. Bear skulls must be clean.
  • Elk -- typical-antler and non-typical antler classes.
  • Turkey – longest beard, longest spur.
Previous First Place Historical Category (deer) winners are not eligible for re-entry. First Place winners in Current Year Category (deer) at last year's show are eligible to be entered in the Historical Category this year. All previous first-place winners in other categories are not eligible for re-entry, but they are automatically invited to display on the "Board Of Honor". Same for bear and elk category first-place winners. This keeps each year's contest fresh.
