Trail Cameras -- How to Evaluate, How to Set Them Up for Best Results
Les Davenport will share with you at the upcoming Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Spectacular -- in seminars and at his demonstration booth --what he has learned, both good and bad, during several years of working with, testing and using trail cameras to help him find huntable, shootabel big bucks. All seminars are free once you have purchased your general admission ticket.
The Spectacular will be February 17-18-19 at the Lansing Center in Lansing. This event and similar events in Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin have been purchased by Bonnier Corporation, parent company of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines, from Target Communications, the previous owner, and renamed the Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Expos, presented by Remington. Outdoor Life will sponsor the seminar series at each expo. The expos will continue to be produced and operated by the previous management team. Expo quality and content depth you have come to expect over the previous 25 years of the event will continue.
Davenport notes that he uses gloves and a scent killer to eliminate human (hand) odor from the camera itself (to get rid of any association). "I test for trigger speed, flash range, photo clarity, and other items," he says. "Proper height is very important when using nearly all cameras. Usually six to eight feet off the ground is sufficient on level ground. Most cameras are set too low. Trail cameras spook fewer deer if they are placed high and angled downward. Incandescent or infrared flash can be detected by deer when the camera is at their eye level. That's why they should be set above the sight-plane of deer."
Davenport also will talk about the value of daytime photos, how to adjust for a buck photographed only at night, and other techniques that can make trail camera information helpful instead of just a pretty picture.
"The Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Expo events are the largest and most comprehensive of their kind," said Jay Miller, Remington Brand Manager. "The events attract thousands of passionate hunters. We're very appreciative of the opportunity and we're excited to be part of these must-attend events for sportsmen."
There will be nearly 250 exhibit booths, many with new products and many offering great bargain, and more than 40 how-to hunting seminars. Seminars are free once you have your general admission ticket.

New in 2012…Major Trophy Contest Additions at Deer & Turkey Expo
There are major upgrades in the trophy deer contest part of the 2012 26th annual Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Expo / Michigan (formerly titled the Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular).
The first upgrade is it's now ‘contests'…plural, as in ‘two'. But that's not all:
• The event's Big Game Trophy Contest (deer/bear/elk/turkey) is extending its scope and its prize opportunities (hunting merchandise and accessories) that will be awarded by random drawing among all entries, not just contest winners.
• The Q1 Buck Pole Mid-South Region contest has been added as a separate contest. This is your last chance to qualify for Q1 finals, which will be held two weeks after the Deer & Turkey Expo.
How will all this work? It's easier than it may seem at first glance.
The Deer & Turkey Expo will be February 17-18-19 at the Lansing Center in Lansing.
TROPHY ENTRY
a) Deer & Turkey Expo Trophy Contest entry fee is $15. With this, you get entry in the Q1 trophy buck contest and a free weekend pass ($36 value). You cannot enter only the Q1 contest.
b) All measuring will be done by members of the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan.
Awards for both contests will be presented Sunday afternoon -- the Q1 Buck Pole awards at 3:00 pm and the Spectacular awards at 4:00 pm, the same time as in previous years.
MERCHANDISE DRAWINGS
There will be merchandise prizes for participants in the Spectacular's trophy contest and the Q1 Buck Pole contest. Your trophy does NOT need to be a contest winner for you to win; winners in the Deer & Turkey Expo's new merchandise prize program will be randomly drawn from among all trophy contest entries, but you must be present to win. Nearly all of Q1 Buck Pole prizes will be given away in random drawings from all entrants in their contest. In addition, prizes will be awarded to the top three bucks in the Q1 contest.
Thus, all entrants have a chance to have their name drawn to win two merchandise prizes, one from each contest.
MEASURING SYSTEMS
Deer & Turkey Expo trophy buck entries are measured using the Boone & Crockett Club / Pope & Young Club scoring system; this system has been used since the Spectacular began 26 years ago.
The Q1 contest uses its own system of four factors: Number of points on each antler beam, plus the inside spread (in inches), circumference of both antler bases (in inches), and the length of the longest tine.
See the Michigan Contests page www.deerinfo.com/MI_contests.asp for complete 2012 trophy contest rules and "measure-only" rules, and for identification of 2011 Best of Show winners.

WHAT'S NEW...
Trail Camera Demos, Two Buck Contests Among New Features at Deer & Turkey Spectacular
A new name and several other new features highlight the 2012 Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Spectacular / MICHIGAN, which will be held February 17-18-19 at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing. This is the Spectacular's 26th year.
New features include:
1) A new name and new owner of the event which, for 25 years, has been known as the Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular. It now is owned by the Bonnier Corporation, owner/publisher of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines. The event is now titled the Field &Stream Deer & Turkey Spectacular / MICHIGAN, presented by Remington. Outdoor Life will sponsor the seminar series. Bonnier also bought similar deer and turkey expos in Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin and retitled them in the same manner.
2) Two trophy buck contests instead of one, with merchandise random prize drawings in both that any contest entrant can win. The Spectacular's deer/bear/elk/turkey event is one contest. The Q1 Buck Pole Mid-South Region contest is the second. Entry fee is $15 for the Spectacular's contest; the fee includes a free three-day pass ($36 value) and automatic entry to the Q1 contest. Trophy bucks cannot be entered only in the Q1 contest. Go to www.deerinfo.com, then click on the Michigan icon, then on Contests, for all details.
3) Trail Cameras seminars and demonstration area. A hugely popular, and helpful scouting tool, much has changed in the trail camera world and is still changing. Les Davenport has put years of work into using and evaluating trail cameras. He will tell you the points you need to know to get most value when you buy, then he will tell you how best to use them for best results and not spook the deer.
4) Predator Calling & Hunting seminars by Mike Brust, a Wisconsin-based long-time predator hunter. He will detail productive Midwestern techniques and talk about weather, clothing you will need, optics and firearms. He also will answer your individual questions at the predator hunting table in the Tech Information Center.
5) Locked Antlers Display of nearly 30 whitetail deer sets and one set of locked caribou antlers. Tough way to die, this battle for mating supremacy, but it's a part of the natural world. You will see some whoppers; the antlers need to be big to be able to lock.
Returning highlights include:
• Nearly 250 exhibit booths, many with product for sale, and at bargain prices.
• Tech Information Center. Other subjects are firearms, archery, slug guns & muzzle loaders, hunting clothes & footwear, optics (scopes & binoculars), and food plots.
• New-products special display area near the main entrance. Examine products without a sales person at your elbow.
• 2-1/2 days of how-to seminars, with more than 40 presentations on a dozen topics. See the schedule at www.deerinfo.com, then click on Michigan and then on Seminars. Seminars are free once you have your general admission ticket.

See 29 locked sets of deer antlers and one set of locked caribou antlers at the 26th annual Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Spectacular / MICHIGAN, presented by Remington, at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing, Feb. 17-19.
These antlers show the harshness of Mother Nature and the tragic results that sometimes happen in the struggle for breeding rights among big, strong bucks and bulls. The antlers have to be big or they won't have the points, mass and springiness needed to lock. Bring your camera. The antlers are exhibited by Ron Foss of Dearborn.
The four Midwestern deer and turkey expos previously owned and produced by Target Communications in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin have been purchased by Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines.
The expos have been renamed the Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Expos, presented by Remington. "The Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Expo events are the largest and most comprehensive of their kind," said Jay Miller, FGI Brand Manager. "The events attract thousands of passionate hunters. We're very appreciative of the opportunity and we're excited to be part of these must-attend events for sportsmen."
Outdoor Life will sponsor the seminar series at each expo. The expos will continue to be produced and operated by the previous management team from Target Communications. Expo quality and content depth you have come to expect over the years will continue.
