New in 2012... BIG TROPHY CONTEST ADDITIONS
- Two Contests / One Entry
- Merchandise Prizes
There are major upgrades in the trophy deer contest part of the 2012 Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular. It's now 'contests'…plural, as in 'two'. But that's not all.
- The Spectacular's Big Game Trophy Contest (deer/bear/elk/turkey) is extending its scope and its prize opportunities (hunting merchandise and accessories) that will be awarded by random drawing among all entries, not just contest winners.
- The Q1 Buck Pole Mid-South Region contest has been added as a separate contest. This is your last chance to qualify for Q1 finals, which will be held two weeks after the Spectacular.
How will all this work? It's easier than it may seem at first glance.
TROPHY ENTRY
- Deer Spectacular Trophy Contest entry fee is $15. With this, you get a free weekend pass ($36 value) and entry in the Q1 trophy buck contest. You cannot enter only the Q1 contest.
- All measuring will be done by members of the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan.
Awards for both contests will be presented Sunday afternoon -- the Q1 Buck Pole awards at 3:00 pm and the Spectacular awards at 4:00 pm, the same time as in previous years.
MERCHANDISE DRAWINGS
There will be merchandise prizes for participants in the Spectacular's trophy contest and the Q1 Buck Pole contest. Your trophy does NOT need to be a contest winner for you to win; winners in the Deer & Turkey Spectacular's new merchandise prize program will be randomly drawn from among all trophy contest entries, but you must be present to win. Nearly all of Q1 Buck Pole prizes will be given away in random drawings from all entrants in their contest. In addition, prizes will be awarded to the top three bucks in the Q1 contest.
Thus, all entrants have a chance to have their name drawn to win two merchandise prizes, one from each contest. Merchandise available as prizes for the Spectacular's contest will be announced on its website -- www.deerinfo.com -- before the Spectacular's dates.
MEASURING SYSTEMS
Deer & Turkey Spectacular trophy buck entries are measured using the Boone & Crockett Club / Pope & Young Club scoring system; this system has been used since the Spectacular began 26 years ago.
The Q1 contest uses its own system of four factors: Number of points on each antler beam, plus the inside spread (in inches), circumference of both antler bases (in inches), and the length of the longest tine.

Trail Camera Demo Area & Seminars Among New Features at Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular
Several new features highlight the 2012 Michigan Deer & Turkey Spectacular, which will be held February 17-18-19 at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing.
New features include:
- Two trophy buck contests instead of one, with merchandise random prize drawings in both that any contest entrant can win. The Spectacular's deer/bear/elk/turkey event is one contest. The Q1 Buck Pole Mid-South Region contest is the second. Entry fee is $15 for the Spectacular's contest; the fee includes a free three-day pass ($36 value) and automatic entry to the Q1 contest. Trophy bucks cannot be entered only on the Q1 contest. Go to www.deerinfo.com, then click on the Michigan icon, then on Contests, for all details.
- Trail Cameras seminars and demonstration area. A hugely popular, and helpful scouting tool, much has changed in the trail camera world and is still changing. Les Davenport has put years of work into using and evaluating trail cameras. He will tell you the points you need to know to get most value when you buy, then he will tell you how best to use them for best results and not spook the deer.
- Predator Calling & Hunting seminars by Gary Clancy, a Minnesota-based long-time predator hunter. He will detail productive Midwestern techniques and talk about weather, clothing you will need, optics, firearms and bows. He also will answer your individual questions at the predator hunting table in the Tech Information Center.
- Locked Anters Display of nearly 30 whitetail deer sets and one set of caribou. Tough way to die, this battle for mating supremacy, but it's a part of the natural world. You will see some whopers; the antlers need to be big to be able to lock.
Returning highlights include:
- Nearly 250 exhibit booths, many with product for sale.
- Tech Information Center. Other subjects are firearms, archery, slug guns & muzzle loaders, hunting clothes & footwear, optics (scopes & binoculars), and food plots.
- New-products special display area near the main entrance. Examine products without a sales person at your elbow.
- 2-1/2 days of how-to seminars, with more than 40 presentations on a dozen topics. See the schedule at www.deerinfo.com, then click on Michigan and then on Seminars. Seminars are free once you have your general admission ticket.
- Women's Hunting Apparel & Related Gear Area, including a fitting room for hunting garment try-on, and an archery shooting area to try women's bows.
- Hunting Dogs & Puppies, with a seminar on buying a puppy and the first six months of training
- U.S. Sportsmens Alliance raffles, sweepstakes and Sentry program. Nearly 200 prizes of hunting gear and accessories.
- Byron Ferguson, archery trick shot, performs Saturday and Sunday, February 18-19.
- Gun auction Sunday.
- Two photo contests (Outdoor Photo Contest and Trail Cam Photo Contest).
- Live game animal and live predators display; get your picture taken with a bear cub.
- Hands-on shooting areas (archery, airgun, laser firearms).
- Flint knapping and Mountain Man demonstration areas and displays.
