2009 WHITETAIL DEER TROPHY CONTEST & DISPLAY

Modified Big Game Trophy Contest Rules -- NEW in 2009

Background explanation: Entry rules pertaining to trophy contest and non-contest big game trophies that will be brought to the 2009 Ohio Deer & Turkey Expo for measuring and scoring have been modified slightly. The changes were made to ensure that all contest entries are measured first so they can go on display more quickly for all expo attendees to see.

It was time to get the horse back in front of the cart. Trophy contest entries and their subsequent display are an important part of each expo. The hunters who enter those trophies deserve to have their trophies measured first and put up for display as quickly as possible.

That hadn’t been the case the past few years. Attendees who bring a trophy only to be measured and scored, but not entered in the trophy contest, generally attend the expo only one day and want to take their trophy, measured and scored, with them when they leave. To accommodate them, measurers frequently scored such non-contest trophies ahead of contest entries.

We believe everyone will agree that’s not right or fair. The measure-only trophies are welcome, but they do not add to the expo because they are not put on display. Contest entries, which DO add to the expo, have ended up getting put to the back of the line for measuring, scoring and display. That's the situation that has had the cart before the horse.

The new rules are right and fair.

The 2009 rules and fees:

GENERAL RULES (Contest & "Measure-Only" Non-Contest)
  • There is no advance entry; just bring your trophy to the show.
  • Entry Times: Noon Friday until 10:00 am Sunday.
  • Entries do not need to be mounted, but they must have a solid skull plate to be officially scored.
  • No trophies released between noon and 3:00 pm Sunday. Scores are being checked. Filing is being checked. Winner notifications are being posted. There is no time for trophy release.
  • Trophy measuring/scoring by members of the Buckeye Big Buck Club (BBBC). Certified measurers on hand for Pope & Young Club and Boone & Crockett Club qualifiers. BBBC phone: 330-533-1773, web-site -- www.buckeyebigbuckclub.org.
  • NEW TROPHY ENTRANCE -- North side of Bricker Building. Follow the signs. This entrance will take you directly to the registration table. Your trophy will be better protected because you will be walking through a designated pathway and not through crowds of people.
This same pathway will be used on Sunday when deer are released, also for maximum protection of your trophy.

TROPHY CONTEST RULES

ENTRY FEE

Fee is unchanged. Fee for the first entry is $15. With this, you get a weekend pass. Pre-scored additional entries are $7.50 each with written proof of official score, or $15 each if the entry has not been officially scored or the person entering the trophy does not have proof of official score.
Do not buy an admission ticket. However, everyone else with you MUST buy a general admission ticket.

TROPHY CONTEST CATEGORIES
ONE CONTEST
  • Ohio whitetail deer (taken during hunting season, hunter known)
DIVISIONS IN EACH ENTRY CATEGORY
  • Firearms & Archery -- Current Year (2008 season), Historical (2007 season and earlier). Black Powder & Crossbows -- All Years
  • Two antler brackets in every divisional category --
    • Typical Antlers (8-, 9-, 10-, 11-, 12- and 13+-point classes)
    • Non-Typical Antlers (all antlers in one class regardless of points)

ADDITIONAL RULES
  • Previous First Place Historical Category (deer) winners are not eligible for re-entry. First Place winners in Current Year Category (deer) at last year's show are eligible to be entered in the Historical Category this year. All previous first-place winners in other categories are not eligible for re-entry, but they are automatically invited to display on the "Board Of Honor". This keeps each year's contest fresh.
  • All contest entries will be hung on display boards.
  • All contest trophies must remain on display until released Sunday at 3:00 pm.
  • NEW EARLY CHECK-OUT RULE: Early check-out (before 3:00 pm Sunday) – there will be a $10 charge per trophy. Early check-outs disrupt the measuring process and on Sunday disrupts the checking of entry lists to determine accuracy of filing, production of winner lists, distribution of participation ribbons to all contest entries, and all other necessary wrap-up paperwork.

CONTEST AWARDS
  • Sunday 4 PM. Trophy must be present to win. Awards based on antler score.
  • Awards proportional to entries:
    • 1-3 entries in class = 1 award;
    • 4-8 entries in class = 2 awards;
    • 9 or more entries in class = 3 awards.
  • Award trophies and participation ribbons given. No cash or merchandise prizes.
  • Award presentations begin at 4:00 pm Sunday in Seminar Area A.

NON-CONTEST "MEASURE-ONLY" TROPHIES
  • Attendee must purchase a general admission ticket to the expo.
  • Measuring fee is $15. The same work must be done as with contest entries. This fee is returned if the trophy has not yet been measured when the attendee is ready to leave. There will be no weekend pass.
  • Trophy will be measured only after all trophy contest entries have been measured. There shouldn't be a problem getting all such trophies measured. Measuring crews in the past always have been able to do so, although sometimes it has been a crunch to get that done.
  • No check-outs between noon and 3:00 pm Sunday. Check-outs disrupt the measuring process and the checking of entry lists to determine accuracy of filing, production of winner lists, distribution of participation ribbons to all contest entries, and all other necessary wrap-up paperwork.

TWO PHOTO CONTESTS – OUTDOOR, TRAIL CAMERA

General Rules for both photo contests

  • You must purchase a show general admission ticket before you can enter either photo contest.
  • Entries may be made from 2:00 pm Friday, March 20, to 10:00 am Sunday, March 22.
  • The contests are open to amateur photographers only.
  • Bring your entries to the show. No mail-in entries are accepted. Entries are to be made in the event office to the right after you come in the east entrance of the Bricker Building. Ask a ticket taker for directions.
  • Entry fee is $5 for up to three photos. There is an additional $5 fee for each additional group of one to three photos entered. The photographer’s name, address, telephone number (with area code), and choice of contest category must be on the back of each entry.
  • There may be up to three awards per category. Photos must remain on display until 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Awards will be given by an expo staff person Sunday at 3:00 pm at the contest display boards.
  • Photos can be picked up at the contest display boards after 3:00 pm Sunday. Photos not picked up will not be returned.
  • For admission before 3:00 pm Sunday, you must buy a general admission ticket. After 3:00 pm, each photo contest entrant can get in free to pick up his/her photos. All contest entrants must show a contest entry receipt to pick up their photos.

Board of Honor

As a previous trophy contest 1st Place winner, you are invited to bring your trophy to this year’s Expo and display it on the non-contest, special display Board of Honor.
Dates are March 20-21-22 in the Bricker Building at the Ohio Expo Center (State Fairgrounds).

Here are the details:

  • You have FREE entry to the Expo all weekend. There is no registration fee. You do not need to buy a ticket, but anyone with you will need to do so.
  • Please bring proof of your winning entry and categorical details. This will make registration much easier.
  • You will receive registration/identification paperwork from contest registration personnel on-site. The paperwork will identify your trophy as "Non-Contest / Board of Honor". The gold sheet will be your identification when you reclaim your trophy. It also will be your pass for the weekend. Your trophy will immediately be placed on display as soon as the registration paperwork is completed.
  • Bring in your trophy any day, but no later than 10:00 am Sunday.
  • Take your trophy to the contest registration area. There’s a new entry on the north side of the Bricker Building. Follow the signs.
  • Identification forms will be available that can be posted with your trophy.
  • Do not bring your award; we have no way to display it properly and securely.
  • You may take your trophy with you when you leave, but not between noon and 3:00 pm Sunday. As you no doubt recall, no trophy heads are released during that time Sunday.
  • Your trophy does not need to remain on display the entire weekend, although that would be appreciated by management and attendees.
  • The display boards will be identified with orange-and-black Board of Honor signs.

If you have questions, please email: glenn@deerinfo.com

Background Information -- Board of Honor
The Board of Honor recognizes those trophies retired from further trophy competition. Retired tro
phies are those that won a first place award at a previous Expo in one of the following categories:
  • Archery Deer / Historical category (any antler-point class)
  • Firearms Deer / Historical category (any antler-point class)
  • Black Powder Deer / All Years category (any antler-point class)
  • Crossbow Deer / All Years category (any antler-point class)
The only way a first place winner can be re-entered is if it won in the Archery Deer / Current Year category or Firearms Deer / Current Year category. When that is the case, the trophy can be entered a second time, but then will be in the Historical category. If it wins a 1st Place award there, it is retired.
