SPECIAL EVENTS

This page will be updated late summer

FOOD PLOT CREATION & HABITAT IMPROVEMENT
Introduced in 2007, this was a big hit. We will build on it in 2008. Mainly for deer, the food plot concept is strong for turkeys, too. In fact, food plots and habitat improvement do more than benefit deer and turkeys. This is natural resource stewardship for the benefit of water, soil, vegetation, game species and non-game species.

There will be two consecutive presentations on the topic (see Seminars Page for exact times and locations), once on Friday, twice Saturday, and at least once and possibly twice Sunday.

Two main points of emphasis are food plot planning/development/maintenance and habitat improvement and maintenance practices that, coupled with food plots, will attract and hold wild game.

The food plot demonstration area will have nursery flats of various grain crops, grasses, brassicas and other deer feed sources. They will be planted one species per flat so you can see exactly what each species looks like.

There also will be a special display on soil testing -- what to do, how to get samples and where to get samples tested. This is a highly important Step 1 that many people overlook in their eagerness to get a food plot started.

VENISON BUTCHERING/PROCESSING
VENISON & WILD FOOD COOKING

Venison is the original organic meat; when handled and cooked properly it is good for you and tastes great. It is nutritious and flavorful, with high levels of good carbs and low levels of bad carbs. It deserves top quality treatment from field dressing, to cooling, to cutting up/processing/storing. And then it deserves proper preparation.

See/hear these two seminars-demonstrations and get the basic information and tips, step by step, that you need to prepare wild foods that will reward all your taste buds. Remember, too, when you process your own venison, you get exactly what you want. Tagging, processing, preparing, consuming ... the circle of life continues. Wild game is given the respect it deserves ... you get the rewards it offers.

BYRON FERGUSON, ARCHERY TRICK SHOT
Byron Ferguson is good, and he's entertaining. He will give two performances Saturday and two Sunday. He's performed in Japan, France, Chile, Canada, Italy, Spain, Sweden and all over the United States, including a performance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

SPECIAL DISPLAYS

OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE & HOME DECORATING PRODUCTS
Anyone who enjoys the outdoors will like these items for home, office, den, cabin or lodge. Products include food seasonings, clothing, cooking gear (kitchen & camp), carved and painted wildlife art, log homes and furniture, antler art, hats/purses/leather goods, etc. These exhibit booths are distributed randomly among all other booths.

LOCKED ANTLERS -- ILLINOIS BUCKS
Locked antlers are tragic reminders of the harshness of Mother Nature and her operating rules, because the usual result is the death of two magnificent animals. Antlers must be large to lock together when two bucks collide, and that almost always takes some of the best bucks from the breeding base.
If you have a set of locked antlers from Illinois or surrounding states, or know of locked sets from Illinois or surrounding states, call us (1-800-324-3337) or e-mail (mac@deerinfo.com) to arrange to display them. We will give you all details when you contact us.

NEW PRODUCTS TABLES
Special display tables near the main entrance show new products of exhibiting manufacturers, reps and dealers. This gives you an opportunity to check out a product without a sales person standing at your elbow. Each product is identified by name, manufacturer and booth number. If you're interested in a product or products, go to the respective exhibit booths and start asking questions.

FOOD PLOT INFORMATION CENTER
Get the basic rules of seedbed preparation and fertilization, best times for planting various deer and turkey food crops, proper planting rates and depths for various crops. Learn what grows best in full sunlight, and what will thrive in shade. Learn the best sizes and shapes of food plots for best hunting results. Learn how to develop food plots and improve habitat so deer and turkeys will be attracted to your efforts and want to stay there.
